Obituary

Giacoma Floreno Alastra (90), of Port Orange, Florida went to serve the Lord on June 18, 2014.

Giacoma was born in the small town of Casteluzzo, Sicily, Italy on October 27, 1923, the daughter of Pietro and Giovanna. Growing up in Sicily, Giacoma was best known for being a perfectionist in the kitchen and making delicious homemade food from scratch. In 1944, she married her husband Francesco Alastra, and they had two sons, Anthony and Peter.

In 1956, at 32 years old, Giacoma, along with her husband and children, migrated to the United States to Detroit, Michigan. There she was a homemaker, and also worked at Helin Tackle Company. She raised her two sons with the strongest sense of family values and love. In 1989, she and Francesco moved to Port Orange to be close to her sons and family. In addition, she and her husband loved to fish and cultivate their garden, full of fichi di'india and cucuzze. Affectionately known as "Nonna" by her adoring granddaughters and great grandchildren, she taught her family how to make traditional Sicilian dishes to pass on her legacy.

One of her greatest wishes was to see her grandchildren get married and to see the birth of her great grandchildren, and she was there for all of it. For that we are so grateful and so blessed. She was such a beautiful woman, inside and out. We will miss her so much, because she brought so much to our lives and our family will never be the same without her.

She is predeceased by her husband, Francesco, and sister, Angela, and survived by two sons, Anthony and Peter, daughter-in-law Beatriz, granddaughter Jackie, her husband Zach, and great grandson Anthony, her granddaughter Anna, her husband Matthew, and great granddaughter Ilaria, and her nieces and nephews in Sicily.
