George D Gelow Jr., 71 of South Daytona was promoted to heaven on September 7, 2017. Born June 14, 1946 to George and Pat Gelow, he grew up in Massachusetts and New York where he graduated from Floral Park High in 1966. Following graduation, George immediately joined the USMC where he proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam (1966-1968). He returned to New York and worked for White Castle until moving to Florida in 1974. He began a 19 year career as a police officer working for Ponce Inlet, Daytona Shores, Daytona Beach and South Daytona. He also worked 20+ years with his family business, A-1-A Roofing. For the past six years, George worked for McDonald's as a maintenance man.
George was a passionate New York Mets fan, enjoyed the New England Patriots, Nascar driver Jimmy Johnson and fishing, but coaching his kids in bowling was the highlight of his life.
George was predeceased by his parents, Priscilla and George Sr. (2011 and 2012) and his brother Kenneth (1985). He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Debby, his daughter Shannon, Cocoa Beach, son George K .(Jennifer) Spring Hill, adored grandsons Daniel and George D., his brother James Sr. (Linda), sister-in-law Brenda Gearhart, his nieces and nephews, and his in-laws Gayle and Barry Brooks of Salem, Va.
A memorial service will be held for George on Thursday September 28th at Lohman Funeral Home Daytona beginning at 7:30 pm with a gathering of family and friends starting at 6. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Volusia County Toys for Tots or the Kailynne Quartier Memorial Ride.
