Gary Michael Whiting, affectionately known as "Papa," passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 73.
Born November 14, 1951, in Winsted, Connecticut, Gary was the beloved son of Grace M. (DiMartino) Whiting and Alfred Whiting. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Laurie Ann (Simmons) Whiting.
Gary was a dedicated member of the Winsted Fire Department for over 23 years and served with the Fire Police before relocating to Florida. He was an active member of the Redmans Club and the Winsted Elks Lodge. A lifelong baseball enthusiast and die-hard Yankees fan, Gary gave back to the sport by coaching Little League and American Legion baseball. He also spent time coaching Midget Football in Winsted, CT.
Gary built a successful career in the flooring industry, beginning as a salesman and advancing to become a representative for several carpet mills. His final and longest-tenured role was with Mohawk Industries, where he cultivated lifelong friendships.
In retirement, Gary found joy on the golf course with his Tuesday league at Cypress Head Golf Course in Port Orange, FL. where he formed many lasting friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Allan Whiting, his mother and father-in-law Kay and George Simmons.
In addition to his wife Laurie, Gary is survived by his children: Bobbi-Jo Phelps-West, Jamie Whiting (Meredith), and Matthew Whiting (Heather). His grandchildren include Tommy Wosyluk, Lizzy Luginbuhl (Kyle), Taylor Girola (Gino), Garrett Phelps, Tylar Whiting, Emma West, Isabella Whiting, and Will Whiting. He was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Luca and Leo Girola.

Gary was a bright light in the lives of those around him. Known for his kindness, attentiveness, and uncanny ability to remember every name and face, he touched countless hearts. He was immensely proud of his family and never missed a chance to share stories about his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved most.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
