GARY SCOTT GRABE, 78, of Ormond Beach, died Tuesday, June 3, after a short illness. Mr. Grabe was a native of Daytona Beach, was graduated from Seabreeze High School (Class of 1954), attended Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA), and earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Florida
Southern College, Lakeland, FL, in 1959.
A commissioned officer of the ROTC program, Mr. Grabe received his Second Lieutenant's bars and became an active member of the US Army following his college graduation. He served as an Army pilot stationed in Augsburg, Germany in the 1960s, and was honorably discharged in 1963 with the rank of Captain, when he returned to the United States. Upon return to the US, Mr. Grabe worked as an executive in the family's lumber business in Ormond Beach; Wickes Lumber Co., Jacksonville, FL; and as an environmental aerial cartographer with MapCo, Inc.
Mr. Grabe was an active member of the local community for many years, serving on numerous local civic boards and as a supporter of the Holly Hill Historical Society. He also was a Rotarian and former member of Saint James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach.
Mr. Grabe is predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Smith Grabe; his father, Laurence Walker Grabe; mother, Rosanna Schoff Roach; and step-mother, Jeanne Railing Grabe. He is survived by his son, Scott Walker Grabe; daughter, Tara Grabe Hayworth; son-in-law, Clinton Hayworth; half-sister, Lauren Grabe Losson; aunt, Evelyn Grabe Petree; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Per his request, Mr. Grabe will be cremated, with his ashes spread at sea in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the Holly Hill Historical Society or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
