Frederick A. Suhr, 93, of Amsterdam, NY, and Palm Coast, FL, passed away January 25, 2021, at Signature Healthcare of Ormond, Ormond Beach, FL, after a brief illness.

Born April 10, 1927, in New York City, he was the son of Ernest and Julia Yuengling Suhr. He attended PS 151 and PS 152 in Queens, NY, and Camden Central School, Camden, NY. He also attended Camden Central High School but joined the Navy before graduation and earned his GED while in the service.

Fred was a World War II veteran and joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 serving 1944-1946 as an Electrician 3rd Class. He was assigned to the USS PC-799, a submarine chaser. Following his discharge, Fred worked for Esso Shipping Co. as a Fireman/Watertender and Marine Electrician.

In 1950, he graduated from the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, Utica, NY, now Mohawk Valley Community College, with an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. He met his future wife, Lucy, at college, and they were married Dec. 17, 1950. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage. Lucy passed away on January 13, 2021.

Fred and Lucy owned a farm in Clinton, NY, after their marriage. Fred also worked for Utica Drop Forge and Tool Company as an Industrial Electrician and then as an Electrical Inspector for the NY Board of Fire Underwriters. Fred continued his education and received a BS degree from SUNY Oswego in 1969, a MS degree from SUNY Albany in 1971, and a MLS degree from SUNY Albany in 1974.

Fred taught Electricity and Electronics at Amsterdam High School starting in 1966 and later became Library Media Specialist at Amsterdam High School in 1974. He received the SUNY Albany teacher award for education television in 1971. He retired in 1991 after 25 years of teaching. He was a member of the Amsterdam Retired Teachers Association.

Fred was Past Chairman of Northeast Chapter of International Association of Electrical Inspectors, Past Commander of Sacandaga Power Squadron, former Boy Scout Scoutmaster and Committee member, former member of Middle States School Evaluations, and Past President and Church Council member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, Amsterdam, NY. He especially liked reading and reporting benchmarks for National Geodetic Survey through the Power Squadron.

Besides his wife, Lucy, he was predeceased by his parents and sisters Margaret Flory and Julie Suhr. He is survived by son Eric Suhr (Laurie Cohen), daughters Linda Stuczko, Wendy Dolfi (Ronald), Betsy Lewis, Susan Morris (Seymour), and Christine Suhr; eight grandchildren, Shannon Cozzi (Christopher), Laura Cohen (Chester), Alan Morris, Lindsey Morris, Matthew Dolfi, Robert Dolfi, Joseph Lewis, and John Lewis; and five great-grandchildren, Justin Cozzi, Brandon Cozzi, Julianna Cozzi, Miriam Cohen, and Henry Cohen; sister-in-law Jennie Wiencek; nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Arrangements are by Lohman Funeral Home, FL. Memorials in Fred's name may be made to St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, 24 Pine St., Amsterdam, NY 12010. A memorial service will be held later in the year for both Fred and Lucy.
