Fred Miller Harpster "Ted" 82 passed away March 20 2010 at Hospice in Palm Coast.

Fred was born August 13 1927 in Elyria Ohio. His family relocated to the Daytona Beach area in 1941. Fred married his first wife Joy Lilly in 1948 and had two daughters. He later married Doris Hillenbrand in 1961.

Fred graduated from Seabreeze High School in 1943 and received his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida in 1952. He then became a Professional Land Surveyor in 1956 a Professional Engineer in 1965 and a General Contractor in 1968.

He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945. Fred worked for the Savannah River plant in Georgia; Florida State Road Department; U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers; and Pan American Airways Missile Test Range in Ascension Island. He was also the Orange County Engineer and the Director of Lake County Public Works. In 1973 Fred founded his own company Harpster Engineering and Surveying Inc. Fred also assisted other area surveyors in establishing the Volusia County Chapter of the Florida Surveyors and Mapper's Society in 1975. He served in all offices and received a lifetime award of appreciation. He was an active member of the Florida Engineering Society the Florida Land Surveyor's Council the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Florida Surveyor and Mapper's Society.

Fred enjoyed camping fishing and billiards. But his passion was horses and motorcycles. He loved meeting and sharing life stories with everyone he met. Fred always told a good tale and was a gentle man.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother and sister-in-law Wally and JoAnn Harpster; daughters Susan McCoy and Bonnie Johnson; sons-in-law Lynn McCoy and Terry Johnson; 4 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and by his companion of 10 years Marilyn Horn. He was pre-deceased by his wife Doris Harpster and his brother Clay Harpster.

A Memorial Service will be held at Baggett & Summers Funeral Home 736 S. Beach St. Daytona Beach at 10:30AM on Saturday March 27 2010. The family will begin receiving their guests at 10:00AM.
