Frank J. Gillooly 78 of Ormond Beach FL died Monday February 25 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Frank was born July 13 1934 in New York New York to Francis J. and Agnes Grace Gillooly Sr. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday March 4th between the hours of 2~4 and 6~8 p.m. with a scripture wake service at 7:15 p.m. at Lohman Funeral Home; 733 W. Granada Blvd. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday March 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 201 University Blvd. Daytona Beach. Interment will follow at Daytona Memorial Park. Frank graduated from LaSalle Academy Iona College and Hofstra University and earned his Ph.D. at St. John's University. He taught in New York and Connecticut and was named Principal in Washington CT. He also taught both undergraduate and master level college classes at St. John's William Paterson University in New Jersey Appalachian State University in Boone NC and the University of North Florida in Jacksonville FL. In addition to his teaching he was a journalist whose columns and editorial cartoons were published in the Herald News and Hudson Dispatch (NJ) the New York Times and the New Yorker. In the late 1980's he branched out to radio and had a very popular program on WGNY-1220. He played music from the 30's and 40's and entertained his audience with his stories of meeting Louis Armstrong and running from his mother when she found out he had told the tailor to "peg" his pants. Frank was an eclectic entrepreneur who created the concepts for and ran a local tavern "The Comic Strip" in Danbury CT and in Florida "Pickwick's Tea Room" in the Trails and a retail store with everything for outdoor bird feeding "Strictly for the Birds". Frank proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves and the National Guard and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He embraced the Ormond Beach community and served as City Commissioner for Zone 3 from 1997~1999. His volunteer work included the Guardian Ad Litem program Council on Aging's Meals on Wheels and Halifax Habitat for Humanity. He participated in many city events and parades and was especially proud to drive his 1969 Cadillac Convertible and his 1950 Studebaker in the Ormond Beach Gaslight Parades. Frank is survived by his wife of 27 years Lori Gillooly Ormond Beach FL his children Brian Gillooly San Diego CA Christie (Ken) Laracuente Milford CT Craig (Jennifer Lonack) Gillooly San Diego CA Timothy (Melanie) Gillooly Tampa FL and by two brother-in-laws Robert Melignano and Michael (Johnna) Melignano. He will always love and watch over his grandchildren Lauren Michael and Tyler Laracuente and Evan Lonack Gillooly. He will be dearly missed by his faithful companions Brighton and Gerard.
