Francis Doherty was born on August 8 1927 in Lynn Massachusetts. He was the fourth of Susan and William Doherty's eight children. Francis was fourteen when his father died leaving behind Susan seven children and a child yet to be born. Shortly thereafter Francis a gifted scholar athlete transferred from college to the business program at Lynn English High School and got a part time job to help support his family. This selfless behavior at such a young age would foreshadow the honor and integrity with which he would conduct his entire life. Francis enlisted in the Coast Guard when he was age 17 and served his country during World War II. He returned to Lynn where he worked as a machinist at General Electric for 11 years. He married Dorothy Donnelly in 1955. Francis moved to a management position at Raytheon (Andover) in 1957 completed his degree at Northeastern University in 1964 and retired from Raytheon as a senior industrial engineer in 1988. In 1994 he and Dorothy relocated to Daytona Beach Shores Florida. Francis leaves behind Dorothy his beloved wife and companion of fifty-five years. Dorothy was truly dedicated to Francis and strove valiantly to keep him comfortable and safe as his health declined these past several years. She will miss him greatly but cherishes the memories of their life together. He also leaves behind three grateful daughters and their families: Nancy Doherty Frank Amy and Peter Feher; Susan Stephen Kara Katherine and Michael McCabe; and Mary Doherty and Lee Willer. They know they are fortunate to have had a father who devoted his life to his family. He is also survived by three siblings: Jean Gardner Mary Patricia Sheridan and Joseph Doherty; his sister-in-law Helen Donnelly; and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife daughters and extended family are saddened to part with Francis but are relieved that he has found peace. His last months were spent in a fierce battle with cancer. Ever the caretaker his main concern was that his wife and three daughters care for each other and persevere through the hardship of losing a loved one to terminal illness. A memorial will be held at a later date. Dorothy and her daughters are forever indebted to the Hospice of Volusia /Flagler Port Orange Care Center and its tremendous staff. At a time when Francis and his family were at the brink of utter despair they were pointed in the direction of this wonderful facility. From the moment of his admission to the moment of his death he and his family were treated with compassion humanity and expert care.
