Fleet M. Collins, 89, of Ormond Beach, FL passed away March 31, 2015, after a long illness. Fleet was born in Greensboro, NC on July 12, 1925 to Clarence and Alma Collins, both deceased. Fleet attended Bessemer High School in Greensboro where he was Senior Class President and earned All-County honors in baseball, basketball, and football.
Fleet served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. After his Navy discharge, Fleet attended the University of North Carolina before embarking on a baseball career that started with the Dunn-Erwin Twins of the Carolina Tobacco League and ended with the Gainesville G-Men of the Florida State League. Fleet worked as a Sales Manager for Life Insurance Company of Georgia for 39 years and retired in 1989.
He was very active in Youth Baseball and Basketball in Ormond Beach and Holly Hill both as a coach and league President. He was active in the Halifax Area Presbyterian Church Softball League and the Over 50 Softball League as a player, coach and director. He enjoyed dancing, and spending time with his friends from Christ Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder and held the position of Treasurer for 35 years.
He was predeceased by his 3 sisters, 5 brothers and his two wives Muriel Zebedee and Carolyn Crist. He is survived by his loving partner of more than 20 years, Betty Fisk of Ormond Beach, FL; and his sons John Zebedee of Ormond Beach, FL, Ron Zebedee of Gainesville, FL, Don Crist (Lori) of St. Augustine, FL, Rick Crist (Galin) of Ormond Beach, FL; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond on Friday, April 10, 2015 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Christ Presbyterian Church Ormond Beach at 11:00am followed by interment at Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, Ormond Beach, FL. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Ormond.
