Obituary

Fay A. Doorneweerd, age 80, of Deland, Florida, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at her home surrounded by her husband and children.

Memorial services will be on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Volusia County Baptist Church. Burial will be at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, Florida. Visitation will be one hour before the memorial service.

Fay Adele Dahlsten was born on June 17, 1943, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, to Paul L. and Evelyn C. (Gustafson) Dahlsten. She graduated from Annandale High School in Minnesota with the class of 1961. The next week she began working for Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance in the actuarial department. On January 27, 1962, she was united in marriage to Dennis Doorneweerd. She continued her employment while Dennis completed his undergraduate degree and his medical (M.D.) degree. (Fay was awarded a PHt degree - Putting Hubby through). She then continued her education at the University of Minnesota as a full-time student in the Department of Education. In her last term before graduation in the fall of 1972, she discontinued her formal education to become a full-time mother and homemaker when their adopted son, David, arrived unexpectedly early. Her career as a homemaker and mother continued the rest of her life and gave her great enjoyment and fulfillment. Over the years, Fay and the children accompanied Dennis to several different areas of the United States including the Army in Kansas, back to Minnesota, to Florida, to Washington state, then Guam, then back to Washington, and finally back to Florida (since 1987) and ending up in Deland. She has stated that "our life has truly been an adventure!"

During these years, she used her musical abilities as an organist and a pianist at several different churches. She was involved in Bible studies wherever the family was living including being the Children's Supervisor in the Bible Study Fellowship program. During this time she also earned her Amateur Radio License, WB0VNL (Of course the VNL stands for very nice lady). In 1993, at the age of 50, she earned her private pilot's license. Additionally, she practiced her gift of hospitality and was known for her radiant smile. Over the years she made many quilts from baby-sized to queen-sized, and many other quilted items, giving most of them to charitable organizations such as the Sanford Pregnancy Center. She greatly enjoyed get-togethers with the informal Quilt and Gun Club for quilt talk and target practice - Fay with her favorite Ruger Charger. Most of all she loved to follow her children's and then her grandsons' activities whether it be school or homeschool activities, music lessons, or sports activities, rarely missing a game until her health prevented it.

Fay is survived by her husband of 62+ years, Dennis; children David (Danielle) of Eustis, Florida, and Susan (Mark) Reudelhuber of Lake Mary, Florida; four grandchildren – Thad, Luke, Zach, and Nate Reudelhuber; brother Wayne (Idella) Dahlsten of Bloomington, Minnesota; and sister-in-law Delores Dahlsten of St Louis Park, Minnesota; nieces Melissa, Michelle, Leah, and Danielle.
She was preceded in death by parents Paul and Evelyn Dahlsten and brother Daryl Dahlsten.

Memorial Service music will be provided by Hope Siers, brother-in law, Jeff Berglund, and grandsons, Thad and Luke Reudelhuber.
Pall Bearers will be her son, David, son-in-law Rudy Reudelhuber, and grandsons Thad, Luke, Zach, and Nate Reudelhuber.

Memorials are preferred to The Pregnancy Center of Sanford in Sanford, Florida.
