Elvia "Ski" Griffith Sowpel of John Knox Village Orange City passed away on Monday June 6 2011. A memorial service in her honor will be held on Thursday June 16 2011; 2:00 PM at the Chapel in John Knox Village Interment will be in Simsbury Cemetery in Connecticut.
Elvia was born in Hartford Connecticut to Olen W and Edna Hansen Griffith. She was raised in West Hartford graduated from William Hall High School Hartford Hospital School of Nursing and Lawrence Memorial School of Anesthesia. She worked as a school nurse at the Squadron Line school was a Girl Scout Leader and Camp Director. After retiring in 1988 she and her husband moved to Yarmouthport MA and then Palm Coast FL. They traveled extensively throughout the USA and 42 foreign countries. She was a proud member of The American Legion Auxiliary the VFW Auxiliary the New England Club NARFE the Lions Club and donated her time to the Flager County Human Society. She was the matriarch of her family strong independent loving ahead of her time who enjoyed cards computer games football and loved animals.
Her son Nicolai "Kip" Sowpel Jr. preceded her in death and she leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 60 years Lt. Col. Nicolai Sowpel Sr. USAFR two daughters: Karen (Ralph) Jacob and Kimberly (Jeffrey) Lary 2 granddaughters; Sarah and Katherine Jacob a nephew George (Patty) Sowpel and many friends of John Knox.
