Funeral Mass for Elizabeth Grasso Sapio age 87 of Port Orange FL who passed away on Wednesday June 15 2011 will be held 10 AM Tuesday June 21 2011 in Epiphany Catholic Church Port Orange. Further service and burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery Plainview NY. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 PM Monday June 20 2011 in the Cardwell Funeral Home Chapel. Elizabeth was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Her parents were Ciro and Guisepina Grasso who came from Palermo Sicily. Elizabeth had 9 brothers and sisters and she was the first child to be born in America. During WWII she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" supervisor inspecting nuts and bolts for the new airplanes being build. When the war ended she worked for Revlon Cosmetics making lipstick and then worked in a factory making men's suits. During that time she met and married Louis Sapio on April 19 1947. They moved to Brooklyn where she went to work at Macy's on Flatbush Avenue. In 1962 she went to work for Kings County Hospital and retired in 1987 from the EKG Department. Her husband Louis passed away May 23 1974 and she leaves behind two children Madeline (Peter) Cuccoro and Sammy (Jodie) Sapio; two grandchildren Peter (Melissa) and Jannine (Brent) . She is also survived by her sisters Beatrice (Manny) Schembari Rosalie (Fred) Faustini and her brother Joseph (Marie) Grasso; sisters and brothers in law Frances (Tommy) DiLieto Madeline Koehan Phyllis (Frank) Slavinski Lillian (Jack) McManus and Jerry (Lucy) Sapio as well as over 36 nieces and nephews and Elizabeth's friend of 70 years Ann Giombaresse and friend of 50 years Sylvia Berman. In lieu of other remberances the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler 3800 Woodbriar Trail Port Orange FL 32129.
