Obituary

Elizabeth Hawthorne Knowlton, 106, of Ormond Beach, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach, FL.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 19th from 4-7 pm at Lohman Funeral Home; 733 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach, followed by a Mass of Resurrection on Friday, March 20th at 9 am at the Basilica of St. Paul's 317 Mullally St. Daytona Beach.
Elizabeth was born March 18, 1908 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Elizabeth (Harney) Hawthorne and Col. Harry Leroy Hawthorne. Her family moved to California when she was 11 where she and her sister, Marion, attended Ramona Convent and Los Angeles High School with a year at Punahou in Oahu, Hawaii. In college, she was a French Literature major at UCLA, and later traveled extensively with her family, living for a time in Paris, France.

Wishing to do her part during World War II, she served in the Navy's WAVES. Elizabeth played the piano and loved opera and served as a lector at Mass for many years. Her St. Patrick's Day birthday parties were legendary. With all the gracious upbringing she had experienced, she was most fulfilled as an aunt to Elizabeth, Sal, and Margaret Ann Abbate, and particularly as a loving and tirelessly dedicated mother and grandmother.
Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Thompson of Ormond Beach and Rita Hawthorne Knowlton of Wilbur-bythe-Sea, as well as her three grandchildren, Patrick James Thompson, Mary Ann Thompson, and Andrew Paul Thompson, and her niece, Margaret Sacks of Ormond Beach. A true lady, Elizabeth lives on with us forever. Arrangements are under the careful care of Lohman Funeral Home Ormond. Condolences for the family may be shared through this online guestbook.
