Elizabeth Gardner 94 of Ormond Beach died Wednesday March 9 2005 at Hospice of Volusia/Flagler. In 1945 Betty as she was affectionately known to the judges and other friends and her husband Harry moved to Daytona to live on their 60 foot Sea Going Houseboat.
Betty became Circuit Judge Wingfield?s secretary now known as judicial assistant in 1955 at the Law Center in Holly Hill. During her tenure as a judicial assistant she assisted other judges including Judge Revels Judge Eastmoore from Palatka Judge Jackson Judge Melton Judge Watson Judge Weinberg all from St. Augustine; Judge Reigle Judge Cobb Judge Nelson Judge Upchurch Judge Miller Judge Mel Orfinger Judge Johnson Judge Kennedy Judge Lee and Judge Hamrick all of Daytona; Judge Blount and Judge Smith Judge Sanders of DeLand and Judge Hammond and Judge Wadsworth of Bunnell.
In 1956 Betty formed the National Secretarial Association which was the first chapter of the NSA in the State of Florida. In 1957 when the NSA became a state association Betty was elected the State Director of the Association.
Betty was the ?backbone? of the Courthouse Annex. She handled the random assignments of cases before the task was assigned to computers. She was widely known for her knowledge of the judicial system and her willingness to share her experience with others. Betty was universally loved and deeply respected by all of the attorneys and judicial assistants who had the privilege of knowing her and working with her in the courthouse. Betty Gardner will be missed by all who new her kindness her knowledge and experience and friendly personality.
