A Mass of Christian Burial for Elizabeth Blakney will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday August 26 2011 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 4600 Belle Terre Parkway Palm Coast FL. A visitation will be held from 4-7:00 P.M. on Thursday August 25 2011 at the Funeral Home. Elizabeth Blakney known to family and friends as "Betty B.B. or Bay Bay" was born on May 11 1936 at Harlem Hospital in New York City. When she was six years old the family moved to the Bronx and Betty spent most of her adult life in that borough. She attended P.S. 23 Elementary School and Eagle Junior High School 10. She went on to attend Theodore Roosevelt High School where she received her high school diploma in 1956. In 1960 she married Jack Blakney and four years later they had a son Jack Jr. known to many as "Chip". Betty's first job was in New York City's diamond center where she worked as an accountant's assistant. In 1968 after passing a civil service exam she began working at the City University of New York Graduate Center as a college office assistant. After passing the B & C exams she took advantage of educational opportunities to move forward in her professional career by acquiring a college degree. She attended Manhattan Community College during the 70's and attained an Associate Degree in Applied Science. Receiving the Associates Degree made it possible for Betty to work at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the administrative accounting department. Opportunity again presented itself and she transferred to CUNY Lehman H. College in the Bronx where she again worked in the accounting department. While working at Lehman College Betty attended evening classes taking the necessary courses toward a degree. She successfully completed all courses and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting from Lehman College. In 1995 she retired from Lehman College and subsequently relocated to Palm Coast Florida in 1998. She joined the African-American Cultural Society when it was in its infancy and remained a supporter. She also joined the North East Florida Jazz Association and the Red Hats Purple Passion organization. She was a committed member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. She loved music loved to dance travel socialize and laugh. She was in her element when cooking and entertaining friends. She was ever ready to be supportive to someone in need had a ready smile and knew just the right thing to say or do to make people feel comfortable and at ease. Most of all she loved her family. Betty's was a life well lived. She was truly a gift to all. Betty is surved by her much beloved son Jack "Chip" Blakney Jr. granddaughter Zahnay Blakney of Philadephia PA sisters Rozetta Davis of Atlanta GA and Isabella Hughes of Bronx NY and brother Kevin Dyson of Bronx NY. She leaves a large number of beloved nieces and nephews two aunts Muriel Carey and Elizabeth Brennan both of Palm Coast Florida and a host of treasured friends. She was predeceased by her parents Florence Hall and James Hughes sisters Genevieve Wilson and Audrey Dyson and brothers James "Buster" Hughes and Arthur "Buck" Dyson Jr.
