Eleanor Joan (Jo) Brown
, 84, of Port Orange, Florida (formerly of Muncie, IN), passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 1, 2018, at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, Florida. She was born on April 28, 1934 in Terre Haute, Indiana, the daughter of the late Walter and Elizabeth Mason.
Mrs. Brown graduated with honors from Ball Hospital School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956, earning her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Indiana University in 1972. She was employed by Ball State University where she taught nursing, retiring from the BSU School of Nursing in 1994 as Assistant Professor of Nursing, Emerita. While employed at Ball State, she was the recipient of several awards. In 1994, she received the Ball State Alumni Association Benny Award for dedicated leadership and service, and in 1990 she was honored by receiving the BSU Nursing Alumni Association Award for outstanding contribution to nursing education. She also received the BSU President's Certificate for dedicated service. Jo was also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Prior to her employment at Ball State, Jo worked at Ball Hospital and became Director of Nursing at the former Parkview Nursing Home, and was secretary to the Mayor of Muncie from 1964-1968.
Jo's community and volunteer service included BSU Alumni Center Volunteer (Alumni Board 10 yrs), Pilot Club (past treasurer), and Yorktown High School Band Boosters (past president). She was also a member of the East Central Indiana Community Singers.
Her hobbies included reading, enjoying music, playing piano and organ, bird watching, family vacations to the beach, and traveling on cruises with friends.
Surviving are her husband Robert F. Brown, Muncie; two children, Julia Craig (Larry), Houston, TX and Susan Soehnel (Joseph), Port Orange, FL. Grandchildren Dustin Soehnel, Erin Soehnel and Taylor Craig. She is also survived by her brother Donald Mason (Marlene), niece Michelle Nelson and nephew Scott Mason and family. She had the most kind, nurturing and compassionate nature, and will be fondly remembered for her radiant smile and joy for life.
