IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward Paul
Zapka
July 18, 1930 – November 3, 2024
Edward Paul Zapka, age 94, of Ormond Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3rd, 2024, after enduring a long but courageous battle with dementia. He was surrounded by his loved ones, who will remember him as a kind and gentle soul with a quick sense of humor.
Born on July 18, 1930 in Akron, Ohio, Ed spent most of his life in Kent, Ohio, where he built a life full of love, and dedication to his family. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as an Airman, a role that shaped his values of courage, loyalty, and dedication. After his military service, Ed was known for his strong work ethic and dedicated himself to his two careers. He retired first from the City of Akron water department, and then retired from a second career as an arbitrator from AFSCME, Ohio Council 8.
In 2011, Ed moved to Florida with his wife Janice, where he enjoyed his retirement years surrounded by sunshine, his beloved garden, and his family. As an avid fisherman, Ed found joy and peace on the water spending countless hours casting his line on Bob's Lake in Canada, and local lakes near his hometown in Kent, Ohio. He was equally passionate about spending time in his garden. His green thumb and love for growing food provided countless fresh meals and joy for his family.
Ed was a devoted husband to Janice for 54 years and a loving father to Sharon Zapka-Wolfe of Daytona Beach, and Denise (Wayne) Onago of Deland. He was a wonderful grandfather to his three grandchildren, Jesse Wolfe (Christine Fox), Chad Wolfe, and Emily Moneypenny, and his great granddaughter, Jasmyn Wolfe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Zapka, and his sister, Marian Gussett. He will be greatly missed by his extended family, David (Linda) Doak, and Mike (Roberta) Doak, along with his many nieces and nephews. His family and friends will cherish memories of fishing trips, rows of homegrown vegetables, and his gentle spirit.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 50 Seville St. Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
