Obituary

Edward James Searby 92 of Holly Hill passed away peacefully in his home on February 7 2011. He has joined his beloved wife of 66 years Irene. Edward was born August 18 1918 in Brooklyn NY to William and Margaret (McKee) Searby. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday February 26 2011 at 1:30PM at the Prince of Peace Church 600 S. Nova Road Ormond Beach FL which will be followed by a gathering of his family & friends at Holly Forest Clubhouse 1000 Walker Street Holly Hill FL. Left to cherish his memory are his children Arlene North (Fred) of Ormond Beach FL; Robert Searby (Dolena) of Daytona Beach FL; Joanne Wrieden (John) of Glendale AZ; Lori Tuttle of Holly Hill FL; his seven grandchildren Jakob Jenohn Ian Sean Jenna Erin & Corey and five great-grandchildren. Edward served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator/instructor during WWII. He was stationed in Coral Gables FL where he taught radio procedures in morse code to cadets. He fell in love with Florida's beauty proposed and married the love of his life Irene and soon established their family there. They came to Daytona Beach where he began his career with the U.S. Postal Service and spent most of his time as the postal clerk of the Holly Hill Branch Post Office. He retired after 30 years of service and began his dream job as a physical training coach at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. Edward was instrumental in establishing the Daytona Catholic Basketball League in the early 60's and coached many championship boys & girls 7/8th Grade "Falcons" & "Hawks" teams at Our Lady of Lourdes. He served as president of this league for many years. He continued coaching and refereeing in the league for over 3 decades. He was honored to receive an award for this dedication from the Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed surf-fishing camping and rooting for his favorite Duke Notre Dame and Dodger teams. He and Irene spent their later years between Florida and their residence in Franklin NC with family & friends by their side. Condolences to the family can be shared at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com
