Edna Miller Smiley beloved companion of Russell C. Smith died unexpectedly on Wednesday November 25 2009 just days before her 87th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Wallace Bruce Smiley and is survived by her daughter Joy Smiley Zabala and son-in-law Adrian Zabala; her son Bruce Smiley-Kaliff and son-in-law Mitchell Kaliff; her granddaughter Gaye Zabala Linford and husband Richard; her granddaughter Adriana Zabala Tavenas and husband Sebastien; and four great-grandchildren Valentine Tavenas and Amanda Jacob and Sophie Linford. Edna was the second of six children born to Emma V. Miller and George C. Miller Sr. in Crescent City Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents brothers George and John Miller and sister Susie Miller Sabatino. She is survived by her sister Sister Jane Miller ssj; her brother Jimmy Miller and wife Louise; and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Edna was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in St. Augustine. During World War II she enlisted in the Navy Waves and served as an airplane mechanic at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. At that time she also worked with her father to compose and distribute ""The Yellar Sheet a newsletter that began as a way to share news among Crescent City service members and grew to include service members all over the world who heard about it and wanted to be included. Edna took great pride in her military service and was very active in the American Legion and in the WAVES National Unit 66 up until the time of her death. After the war Edna completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education and leadership at Stetson University on the G.I. Bill. During her lengthy professional life she was a teacher at DeLeon Springs South Ridgewood and Ortona Elementary Schools. She also served as principal at Ortona Elementary and George C. Miller Elementary School in Crescent City. She later became the Director of Adult Education at Daytona Beach Community College during which time she also provided leadership to the Volusia County Council on Aging and was president of the Florida Council on Aging. Edna was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for over fifty years. She was active in Daughters of the King and also served on the vestry and was Senior Warden for a term. She very much enjoyed her time as a clergy wife during the years that her husband Deacon Wallace Smiley served at Grace Church in Port Orange and finally at St. Mary's. Although she led an active and accomplished life Edna's greatest joy was to be with her large extended family both to share times of joy and to provide support and assistance in times of need. Almost every member of the family has stories to tell about a time when they benefitted from her generosity of spirit and gift of time. A memorial celebration of Edna's life is planned for Saturday January 30 2010 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Daytona Beach.
