Edgar Lohman loving father and patriotic veteran died Thursday March 10 2011 just shy of his 90th birthday. A life tribute with full US Naval Military Honors and fly over will be Monday March 14th at 10am in the chapel of Cox-Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home. His family will receive friends on Sunday March 13th from 4-6pm also at the funeral home. A committal service will be held at 3pm at the Lohman Private Estate Mausoleum located in Daytona Memorial Park Daytona Beach FL. Edgar was born in Dallas Texas on May 22 1921 and moved as a child to Miami Florida. He graduated from Jackson HS enlisted in the US Navy as a young man and enjoyed more than 37 years of active duty and military reserve service including three WestPack cruises to Vietnam. Among his decorations he earned multiple bronze stars. During WWII he was stationed in Vero Beach. At that time the Vero Beach airport was a Naval Air Station and training facility where Edgar served as a dive bomb squadron flight engineer on multiple training missions. He remained in Vero Beach after his service; met and married Opal Holland and together they raised three sons. Edgar's civilian life included 35 years of service with the postal service. For 18 years he was Examiner -in-Charge of the US Civil Service Examining Boards in Vero Beach supervising all Federal Examinations and Civil Service activities in five counties. But his passion throughout his adult life was his support of the American Legion the VFW and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and their respective initiatives. He served as past commander of both the American Legion and the DAV and was instrumental in the creation of "Vero Beach Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary" which commemorates all veterans from the Vero Beach area who died in combat while defending our country. He also spearheaded a bronze memorial located in the Vero Beach Airport which lists and recognizes the 100+men who were killed while participating in Naval training missions while stationed there. His love for the Navy and for his fellow veterans was celebrated recently when he participated in the SE Florida Honor Flight to the WWII monument in Washington DC. Next to his US Naval retirement ceremony held in 1986 at NAS Jacksonville never did he have a more anticipated trip or a more meaningful day. Edgar lived for more than 70 years in Vero Beach. It became his beloved hometown. He lived beside the American Legion which he considered an extension of his living room until recently when he became a resident of Horizon Bay ALF. Throughout the years Edgar also enjoyed studying genealogy and with the help of his niece and fellow genealogist Carmen Buckhalt they compiled the complete genealogical history of the Lohman Family whose roots originated in Lesum Hannover Germany. Edgar's other true passion was the love he shared for his sons and family. He was a kind and warm-hearted man and his legacy of warmth and charm will always be remembered along with his big blue eyes lovable personality and countless military stories he delighted in sharing. He will remain in our hearts forever and is survived by his son Lowell (Nancy) and Victor (Mary) both of Ormond Beach FL son Daryl (Christine) of Tampa FL; his 7 grandchildren Brian (Jennifer) Ty (Tovah) Chris (Maria) Lauren and Michael Lohman and Breyli and Maigen Pardee his 5 great grandchildren Taylor Jordan Jacob Tristen and Caleb Lohman many nieces nephews and cousins and his Maine Coon Brewster named for the Brewster Dive Bomber. He was preceded in death by his former wife Opal Silverman his 6 siblings his parents and his beloved cat Josephine. His family thanks their many friends the love and support shown to their father.
