Dorothy Barabara (Von Duhn) Smith, age 92 of Turtle Dove Trail, DeLand, FL passed away peacefully on Friday, December 18, 2015 at Memorial Hospital, West Volusia surrounded by her children and close friends. She was born in West New York, New Jersey on February 13, 1923, the daughter of Rudolph and Anna (Walz) Von Duhn. She graduated from Freeport High School in Freeport, Long Island, NY in 1941. Her family moved to Wentworth., New Hampshire in January 1942 where she met her husband, Stanley Richard Smith. They followed her parents to DeLand, FL in November 1950. In 1985 she retired from Sherwood Medical from her position in the accounting department for 23 years. She enjoyed traveling, cruising, and bowling. After moving to Whisperwood in 1998, she enjoyed bingo, shuffleboard, bocci ball, cards, and billiards. She was an avid fan of NASCAR, her favorite being Jeff Gordan since his rookie years. She was predeceased by her husband Stanley of 57 years. He lived in assisted living homes from 1997 to 2003 because of Alzheimer's.
Dorothy's survivors include sons Stanton and daughter-in-law Toni of Gainesville, FL, Roderick and daughter-in-law Judy of Mills River, NC and daughter Daryl Gardner of Campobello, SC. Also granddaughters Virginia Kay and husband Ralph of Aiken, SC, Kendra Smith-Joiner and husband Kevin of Etowah, NC, Stacy Smith-Mercer of Austin, TX, and Jennifer Byrd and husband Dwayne of Goose Creek, SC, and one grandson, Brian Smith and wife Carrie of Flat Rock, NC. Dorothy had nine great-grandchildren - 4 great-granddaughters Ashlee (17) and Jordan Kay (14), Kelsey Smith (17) and Avery Byrd (3) and 5 great-grandsons Travis (20), Dominic (6), and Marc Smith (1), Hayden Joiner (14), and Marcus Byrd (3). Survivors also include nephew Harold Williams of Palatka, FL and niece Cheryl Sorrill of Ormond Beach, FL.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, at Lohman Funeral Home, 935 E. New York Ave., DeLand, FL. A funeral service will be held the following day on Wednesday, December 23 at 11:00 a.m.also at Lohman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's or Cancer research of your choice.
