Dorothy Kathleen George

Dorothy Kathleen George, 100, of the Falls in Ormond Beach, Florida passed peacefully at home on August 11, 2014. Born October 10, 1913 in Plumstead, England to the late William Henry Behague and Kate Elizabeth Oates-Smitham, Dorothy and her family immigrated to New Zealand in 1921 where she spent her youth. In 1936 she married Charles Henry Walford and they welcomed their daughter Diane Louise in 1938.
Dorothy was a beautiful, independent, feisty woman with a wonderful sense of humor, a strong will, and a loving and generous heart. During World War II she served in the Royal New Zealand Navy as a WREN and Gunnery Instructor.

In 1946 Dorothy went to the Fiji Islands as an Assayer for a Canadian Gold Mining Company. She owned Beauty Salons in Fiji and New Zealand. In Fiji Dorothy met Lt. Joseph Ward George (USAF); they married in Hawaii in 1948. She was naturalized in San Antonio, Texas in 1952 where Joe was stationed. She was very involved as President of the Officer's Wives Clubs at AF bases in Montana, Alaska, Virginia and Bermuda, and was a U.S. Customs and Immigration Inspector in Bermuda until Joe's retirement. Her beloved husband died in 2003.

Over the years Dorothy was very active in volunteer work including The Casements Guild in Ormond Beach, the Red Cross and the DeBary Chamber of Commerce. This talented artist continued painting, making jewelry, beaded, embroidered and knitted items. Her award winning hand crafts were always in demand. Dorothy could see any handmade item and reproduce it. Many family and friends have special gifts made as an expression of her love. She was also and ardent gardener.

She is survived by her loving daughter Diane Johnson (Ormond Beach); her beloved family of grandsons, Walter Burke Johnson III and wife Ashley, Kenneth Johnson (Richmond); great grandsons, Kyle (Wilmington, NC), Ryan, Tyler, and great granddaughter Carleigh, all of Richmond; niece Jan Adams, of Melbourne, Florida; Joe's nieces Trish and Sharon, and nephew Robert and their families; and family in New Zealand and Australia.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1pm on September 4, 2014 at Tomoka United Methodist Church, 1000 Old Tomoka Rd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Dorothy's memory to American Eldercare, 1801 South Nova Road, Suite 104, South Daytona, Florida 32119, Tomoka United Methodist Church or the Hospice of your choice. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Daytona.
