Dorcas H. Channell , of Daytona Beach, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021, at the age of 87.
Dorcas was born February 24, 1934, the daughter of Ralph and Dorcas (Barber) Hickox. Her father was a Naval officer and her mother worked in the insurance industry. She lived in Panama as a young girl before moving to Washington D.C. Her father died when she was seven years old after his ship went down near Newfoundland during WWII. Her mother worked and raised her in Washington D.C. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia where she met her future husband, Ralph Norman Channell while he was attending the United States Naval Academy. They were married in 1955. Their first son, Ralph, was born in 1957 in Washington D.C. They moved to Hawaii for two years and then to Japan where their second son, Harold, was born in 1961. In Hawaii, Dorcas studied Hula, and in Japan she taught English. The Navy sent them around the world including Rhode Island, Virginia, Germany, Moscow, California, and England. They retired in California in 1982. Dorcas then moved to Daytona Beach, Florida in 2005, where she loved her beautiful home in LPGA and often entertained guests. Dorcas loved to cook and started a successful catering company and restaurant in California. She also loved to sew and often taught sewing classes. In Florida she volunteered at the Palmetto House, organizing and cooking meals for those in need. Dorcas also volunteered for the Christel House charity golf tournaments, offering homemade baked goodies for the golfers and the auction. She loved her family and always made Sunday Dinners at her house. She was a member of the Tomoka United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father Ralph Hickox, mother Dorcas Hickox, and husband Ralph (Norm) Channell.
She is survived by her sons Ralph (Patricia) Channell and Harold (Scott Phillips) Channell, grandson Christopher Channell, granddaughter Jennifer Channell, great-grandson Hesley Ott (from California, with whom she learned to Facetime), her close cousin Judith Garrett of Ormond Beach, in-laws Anne Channell, Ruth (Barry) Kershaw, and Jerry (Mary) Channell and several other cousins and nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 3 – 4 pm Thursday, December 2nd at the Lohman Funeral Home, 733 West Granada Blvd, Ormond Beach, Florida 32174. Family will begin greeting guests at 2:00 pm for a brief visitation. A reception will follow the celebration service.
