Dora Ella Slaughter Sheffield

Dora Ella Sheffield, 94, a fifth generation Floridian, died Wednesday June 19, 2019 in Orange City, Florida.

Dora Ella was born at the home of her maternal grandmother, Dora Smith, in Daytona Beach, Florida on January 26, 1925 to the late Robert Eugene Slaughter and Annie Lorene Smith  Slaughter. Dora Ella married John William Sheffield on July 5, 1942. She and "Bill" were married in her parents' home by the late J.P. Prevatt, Sr. Both Dora Ella and Bill were  lifelong Christians and members of the Church of Christ in Daytona Beach where she worshiped at the former Bay Street Church of Christ and later at the Beville Road Church of Christ. She worshiped most recently with the Spring Garden Church in Deland, Florida.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dora Ella was preceded in death by her siblings, Cyril O. (Buck) Slaughter, Virgil Oakley Slaughter, and Dorma Jean Slaughter.

Dora Ella and Bill's survivors include two daughters, Karen Burgess (Burl) of Deland, Florida and Cheryl Chumley (Joseph) of Lakeland, Florida. Grandchildren include, Garrick Burgess (Tammy) of Deland, Florida, Gregory Burgess of Deland, Florida, Gavin Burgess (Elizabeth) of Tallahassee, Florida, John Chumley (Mari) of Longwood, Florida, Cara Chumley Goss (Matthew) of Gainesville, Florida, Erin Chumley Straub (Scott) of Lakeland, Florida; Fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Dora Ella was known for her love of and commitment to her church, family and friends. She  was known for her humble, gentle spirit and was loved by all who knew her.

Active pallbearers include Garrick Burgess, Gregory Burgess, Gavin Burgess, John Chumley, Matthew Goss, and Scott Straub. Honorary pallbearers are Burl Burgess and Joseph Chumley.

The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to the nurses and support staff of  Halifax Health Hospice and Majestic Oaks (John Knox Village, Orange City) for the loving care extended to our loved one.

A Visitation will be held from 9:00am until 9:30am Saturday June 22, 2019 in the Chapel at Lohman Funeral Home Deland, 935 East New York Avenue. A Funeral Service will be held at 9:30am Saturday June 22, 2019 also at Lohman Funeral Home Deland. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:30am at Daytona Memorial Park, 1425 Bellevue Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Halifax Health Hospice, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Florida 32129 or to Spring Garden Church of Christ, 403 South Spring Garden Avenue, Deland, Florida 32720.
