Donald F. Murphy died Monday, June 29, at Halifax Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on April 16, 1929 in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Jeremiah and Elizabeth Houlihan Murphy. He served in the United States Army in 1951 and was active in the Army Reserve until 1956. He married Lillian DiVirgilio on January 31, 1953, a marriage of 53 years. In 1990, Donald retired after 34 years with Northeast Utilities Co. in Berlin, Connecticut.
Survivors include his three children, Lillian Giordano, Margaret (Kerry) Buechele, Cynthia Murphy (Larry Hubbard); three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Roshani) Giordano, Nicole Ginnow, and Douglas Buechele; a sister, Josephine M. Miller (Gerald P. Miller); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by his four sisters, Mary Tierney, Kathleen Carlson, Margaret O'Leary, and Terri Fischer.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Lohman Funeral Home Port Orange, 1201 Dunlawton Ave., until the 7 p.m. service officiated by The Rev. Mark Spivey. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
