Diana Mattison Anderson of Atlanta Georgia passed on March 12 2009 at the age of 83 in Port Orange FL shortly after moving there to live with her daughter. Due to the advancement of cancer Mrs. Anderson peacefully transitioned while at Hospice of Volusia County. Mrs. Anderson was born in Tate Springs Tennessee in 1925 to the parents of Walter Mattison Sr. and Ida Jennings Mattison. Mrs. Anderson was the youngest and last surviving sibling of Leila Mattison Walter Mattison Jr. Cecil Harris and Hazel Cowan. Mrs. Anderson married Wesley Gideon Anderson Sr. in 1953 in Atlanta GA. Mrs. Anderson was a tireless educator and community servant dedicating her life to teaching nurturing and guiding hundreds of young people in their formative years. She was a 1947 graduate of Spelman College. Mrs. Anderson received her Masters in Education from Atlanta University in 1967. She retired in 1988 after having taught fro 40 years with 37 of them in the Atlanta Public School System. A person full of energy and desire to give back Diana was an active part of several community causes in the area. She funneled most of her energies through her church the Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Scouting and the Emmaus House Summer Program. At Allen Temple A.M.E. she faithfully attended Sunday school was on numerous boards organized many Holiday youth programs. She helped reinvigorate Allen Temple's Cub Scout Pack 850. With over 30 years of service with the Scouts she achieved unprecedented levels of success for a woman. Mrs. Anderson was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award and completed Wood Badge leadership training. She served as director of the Emmaus House Protestant Episcopal Church Summer Program from 1978-1998 and joined the board after retirement. Mrs. Anderson's sorority was dedicated to helping adults achieve their GED and organized health fairs in local housing projects. In Mrs. Anderson's spare time she was an annual patron of the Atlanta Symphony Alliance Theatre and Atlanta Opera. She busied herself with the general health and welfare of her family friends and neighbors. Her hobbies included gardening drawing painting ceramics and was a sports enthusiast. She was a natural artist. Retirement prompted her exploration of her talent at the Harriett G. Darnel Senior Center. Her social clubs included the OFF Club and her 62-year membership in her beloved Las Hermanas (translated: The Sisters) which began in 1946 as a monthly meeting of her Spelman College graduating class in preparation for their 1947 graduation. Their instant camaraderie inspired the creation of the club. Las Mermanas celebrated its 60-year anniversary in 2007. Mrs. Anderson was the president in 2007. Mrs. Anderson was the president of the organization at the time of her death. Mrs. Anderson is survived by her son Wesley G. Anderson Jr.; her daughter Anita Anderson Endsley and husband Chris Endlsey along with her grandchildren: Ellis and Mattison Endsley and grandson-in-guardianship Nicholas Rishel. She is predeceased by her husband Wesley G. Anderson Sr. in 1989 her sister Leila Mattison in 1942 her brother Walter Mattison Sr. in 1994 her sister Hazel Cowan in 1995 and her sister Cecil Harris in 2003. A memorial service for Diana Anderson will be held on April 18 2009 at 11:00am at Allen Temple A.M.E. Church 1625 Simpson Road N.W. Reverend Claude Ray James will be officiating. Repast to follow in Allen Temple Fellowship Hall. A private graveside interment will be held April 18 2009 at 10:00am at South-View Cemetery 1900 Jonesboro Road S.E. Atlanta.
