Funeral services for trooper Darryl Haywood Sr. who was killed in the line of duty on October 2, 2004 will be held on Thursday, October 7th at 10:00 a.m. at the Ocean Center Daytona Beach Fl.

Darryl Louis Haywood Sr. was born on December 7, 1954 in New York City. He was the second child born to Louise and the late Louis Haywood. While still an infant Darryl was baptized in the Epworth United Methodist Church Bronx N.Y. which he continued to attend into adulthood. He was educated in the N.Y.C. Public School System attending Brooklyn Technical and William Howard Taft High Schools. Darryl was musically inclined and performed with a local band playing bass guitar and vocalizing.

After graduating from Taft High School Darryl attended Bronx Community College as an accounting major. Upon completion of his coursework Darryl obtained a position with the N.Y.C. Police Department. Darryl joined the Department in 1979 as a patrol officer in the 44th Precinct Bronx N.Y. and it was there that he met the former Linda Sharpe who became his patrol and life partner. Shortly after their marriage Darryl was assigned to the Highway I Motor Cycle Unit. From there he was recruited to work for the N.Y.C. Police Commissioner?s Office where he served under Commissioners Ward Brown Kelly and Safir. Darryl was promoted from Police Officer to Detective 3rd grade and he ultimately retired as a Detective 2nd grade from his assignment to the Major Case Squad. During his tenure as a Detective Darryl had assignments in the Intelligence Division where he was primarily assigned to the Diplomatic Protection Unit and responsible for the security of prominent personalities foreign heads of state and the President and Vice President of the United States. Darryl was highly regarded by his peers and all who knew him.

In December 1999, Darryl and his family relocated to Florida and in March 2000 he began his career with the Florida Highway Patrol assigned to Troop D Volusia County. He received numerous commendations during his four-year career and was most recently honored as July's Trooper of the Month for saving the life of a motorist by rescuing him from a burning vehicle. He truly loved his job family and community. He will leave a tremendous void in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Darryl leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory a devoted wife Linda; a daughter Erica; a son Darryl Jr.; a granddaughter Chloe; a mother Louise Haywood of Columbia S.C.; a sister Gwendolyn Goode of Raleigh N.C.; a sister Deborah Polite Carl of Columbia S.C.; one brother David of Columbia S.C.; a father-in-law James Sharpe Sr.; a brother-in-law James Sharpe Jr. Doris of Hempstead N.Y.; a sister-in-law Mildred Scott Alfred of the Bronx N.Y.; aunts uncles nieces nephews cousins and a host of other relatives and many loving friends and colleagues.
