Memorial Services for Darryl L. Gentry, 75, of Ormond Beach, Florida, who passed away at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL on March 22, 2017 will be held at Grace Chapel, Port Orange, FL at a later date.
Darryl was born in Bay Shore, NY on September 27, 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Romas and Ruth Gentry. Darryl is survived by his son, Blake Gentry of Winston-Salem, NC and his two younger siblings, Daniel Gentry of Port Orange, FL and Wayne Gentry of Winston-Salem, NC.
Darryl moved from North Babylon, NY to Port Orange, FL in 1955. He graduated from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, FL in 1961 and served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1963. Darryl received an Associate of Arts Degree from Daytona Beach Junior College in 1966 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL in 1968. He received his Master of Social Work degree from Barry University, Miami, FL in 1972. Darryl spent over 31 years working as a practicing Licensed Professional Clinical Psychotherapist in Mental Health Clinics, Family and Child Guidance Clinics, Hospital Psychiatric Clinics and Private Practice before his retirement in 2003. During his professional career, he held academic appointments as an Adjunct Instructor and Field Instructor in The School of Social Work, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 1977-1986 and visiting instructor in the Department of Psychiatry, Wake Forest University Medical School, Winston-Salem, NC 1984-1986. Darryl was a Clinical Instructor of Brie Psychotherapy at Daytona State College, 1996-1998. His professional career was dedicated to being a practicing Clinician, Instructor, and published author in the Art of Brief Psychotherapy. Darryl had a great love and passion to publish his work and train others in Brief Therapy movement in America. He was awarded the honor of Approved Supervisor by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Darryl is in the "Century of Excellence" at Mainland High School's History Museum in Daytona Beach, FL. In retirement, Darryl enjoyed camping and hiking around the Western part of the United States. His proudest moment came at the age of seventy, when he hiked to the very bottom of the Grand Canyon. He loved collecting and playing his 50's record collection at oldies dances. Since 2010, he has offered a class on the Birth of Rock N Roll. In 2013, at the age of seventy-one, he published his first non-fiction book called "Let the Good Times Roll: the Birth of Rock N Roll 1955-1963. Darryl was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach.
