Daniel Dennis Sain ""Dan"" was born April 6 1930 in Toluca NC to Dennis and Cora Sain. He graduated from Belwood High School in 1948; Lenoir Rhyne College in 1952; Duke Divinity School in 1957; and from Emory University with the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Biblical Theology in 1964. He served as Pastor of United Methodist Churches in North Carolina Georgia and Florida. Early in his career he taught at Spartanburg Junior College in Spartanburg SC and at Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer NC. Dr. Sain moved to Daytona Beach in 1964 and joined the faculty of Bethune-Cookman College. From 1967 to 1977 he served as faculty member and Dean of Aeronautical Studies at Embry-Riddle University. He returned to Bethune-Cookman in 1977 and served as head to the department of Religion and Philosophy until his retirement in 1993. Daniel spent his youth on his family's farm in Western North Carolina. While not picking cotton plowing or harvesting hay he enjoyed swimming in the creek climbing rocks and especially laughing and joking with family members including many cousins. In high school he was in the 4H Club and won a prize with his cow at the county fair. He first danced with his sweetheart Lavada Wilson at a Methodist youth district gathering. The two married in August 1952 and a daughter and son soon followed. A lifetime of learning and living exemplifies Daniel Sain. He and his family loved to travel and visited various U.S. locales as well as Europe (Germany and Paris) Canada and the Caribbean. Daniel and his wife explored further global regions including the USSR the Mediterranean the Middle East Egypt The Holy Land Scandinavia the British Isles Central America and other European regions. He played golf and had three holes-in-one. His favorite hobby was flying model airplanes which he especially enjoyed when his son was growing up; the two enjoyed many exhibitions and contests together. During his retirement years Daniel was a member of the Golden Hawks a local radio control model airplane club. He enjoyed many hours in his garage workshop assembling model airplanes which provided colorful dcor when not being flown. Daniel read fervently and his favorite topics included history mystery theology the classics and health and wellness. He enjoyed going to plays and movies as well as listening to recordings of old radio shows and watching movies and old programs especially ""The Man from U.n.c.l.e."" which he and his daughter often watched together. His ever growing library of books dvd's and cd's reflected his curiosity and aesthetic appreciation of life. Daniel valued humor he loved to tell jokes and always had a clever remark and intelligent observation to share his favorite comedian was Red Skelton. Daniel loved home cooked meals made with love by his wife. He had common sense and a practical way of doing things and solving problems. He loved gadgets and in his later years he often ordered helpful creative gadgets from his host of catalogues. Time with his family was the most precious part of life to Daniel. Grandchildren loved to come to pop's house where they enjoyed stories games and flying airplanes in the yard. When the grandchildren got older they admired him for his wisdom and cherished times discussing literature politics and life in general. Daniel and Lavada had many fun adventures in their retirement years including time spent in North Carolina relishing in the company of his sisters his brother and their families as well as with his father who lived to reach the age of 98. Daniel is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Lavada Wilson-Sain; a daughter Danita Stokes (Stan) of Jacksonville; a son David (Laura) of St. Louis; 6 grandchildren Stephen Stokes of Jacksonville Phillip Stokes (Taylor) of Orlando Michelle Sain of Hollywood CA Amanda Sain Melissa Sain and Matthew (Courtney) Sain of St. Louis; 2 sisters Betty Lou Elmore of Shelby NC and Julia Sain of Toluca NC; 1 brother Harry Sain (Helen) of Toluca NC; and many other family and friends who reside in the Shelby NC area. A memorial service will be held Friday August 23 2013 10:00am at First United Methodist Church Port Orange 305 Dunlawton Ave. Port Orange FL Rev. Tom Nelson officiating.
