Colonel Harvey L. Adams Jr. Port Orange Florida passed away on July 2 2009 after a long battle with liver cancer. Harvey was born on December 18 1930 in Camden Arkansas the son of Harvey and Marguerite Adams. His father was a Planters Peanut Company employee and owner of The Nut Shop in Lynchburg Virginia. Harvey and his sister Pat were raised in Lynchburg Virginia where Harvey was an All-State Football Player. Harvey graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1951. He earned a full-ride football scholarship to the University of Tennessee and later transferred his scholarship to Wofford College in Spartanburg South Carolina. He met Mary E. Millwood while attending Wofford College and they were married in 1954. After graduating from Wofford College in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Harvey was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in the United States Army. Harvey made a career of the military and he and Mary spent 30 wonderful years traveling the globe with their children. Harvey commanded artillery units at the battery battalion and brigade level. He had many fond memories of life while commanding the 1st Battalion 8th Field Artillery Regiment at Scholfield Baracks Hawaii and the 214th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Sill Oklahoma. Harvey was a decorated combat veteran and his awards and decoration include the Legion of Merit Bronze Star and Air Medal. After retiring from the Army Harvey served as the Veterans Affairs Administrator for Campbell University in Bules Creek North Carolina and later as the Registrar of Methodist College in Fayetteville North Carolina. He retired from civilian life in 2005 and made his home Port Orange Florida. Harvey is survived by his wife Mary; and their five children Harvey L. Admas III Elizabeth (Libby) T. McCall Shelly L. O'Donnell Phillip G. Adams and Timothy L. Adams and their families. The memorial service will be held at Westminister-By-The-Sea Presbyterian Church 3221 Peninsular Dr. Port Orange; 11 a.m. on July 6 2009 followed by a private family family reception. Harvey will be interned in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
