Obituary

On September 19, 2022, Christian John Mahlstedt Jr. of Ormond Beach, FL passed away at the age of 79 after a short term, sudden illness. He was born on Long Island, NY to parents Chris Mahlstedt Sr. and Eileen Hewson-Mahlstedt.

It is said that Chris learned to fish before he could talk. He became a licensed captain for 20 years, operating commercial passenger and fishing vessels from Connecticut to Alabama but could most often be found fishing in the waters off Captree and Montauk, Long Island.

Chris met his future wife, Mary Judith Baumann, while in college at Hofstra in 1961. After beating out the many other suitors for Mary's affection, they married in 1965 and have been inseparable ever since. Upon graduation from college, Chris enlisted in the Army, achieving rank of Lieutenant as a tank company commander.

In 1977, he started up Island Wide Marine Agency which he ran for nearly 46 years. Chris' deep booming voice, his caring for others and his larger than life personality resulted in "Chris Mahlstedt" becoming a household name throughout Long Island and fishing communities all up and down the eastern seaboard, as well as a favorite among the locals here in Florida over the past 15 years. Chris was an incredible man who touched countless lives, and an unparalleled husband, father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed.

Chris is survived by his wife, Mary Mahlstedt, his daughter, Elizabeth Mahlstedt, his son and daughter-in-law, Christian John Mahlstedt III and Carol Mahlstedt, his three grandsons, Christian Mahlstedt IV, Lucas Mahlstedt and Eric Mahlstedt and several nieces and nephews (Glen Henry, Gary Henry, Cheryl Henry, Lisa Acuna, Mark Tureo) as well as best friends Al Szigethy, Bunny Szigethy and their children Jean Riddle and Ann Murray.

The family will receive visitors at a celebration of life on October 21, 2022 at Lohman Funeral Home in Ormond Beach, FL from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
