Dr. Charles W. ?Smitty? Smith Jr. age 76 of Athens Ohio died Friday evening April 7 2006 at his home. Born March 6 1930 in New Smyrna Florida the son the late C. Winston Smith and Alta Webster Smith Eslinger. He was Professor Emeritus at Ohio University after 33 years of service with the College of Education. A graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School he received his B.S. and Master Degrees from Florida State University Tallahassee and his Doctorate from Wayne State University Detroit. Dr. Smith was a member of Christ Community Wesleyan Church Phi Beta Kappa Life Member American Legion Post 21 National Council of Teacher of Mathematics and the Ohio University Emerti Association. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Darlyne Esterbrook Smith; a daughter & son in law Melissa & Kent Raney of St. Louis Missouri; a son & daughter in law Lee & Gene Smith of Columbus Ohio; grandchildren- Alan & Jessica Raney and Grant & Ben Smith; a sister & brother in law Jeanne Arlys & Harry Thomas of Nelsonville Ohio and a brother Francis Eslinger of Columbus Georgia. Graveside service will be conducted Friday 11:00AM at Edgewater Cemetery Edgewater.
