Charles Robert Hughes

Of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2016, at the age of 84. He was born on September 7, 1931 in Washington DC to Roy Ellis and Rose (Macdonald) Hughes. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1949 and Fordham University (ROTC) in 1953, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science.

Charlie began his Broadcasting Career in 1947 at the age of 16 as a part time announcer at a Military Base in Ginzing, Austria while his father worked for the State Department. Charlie worked for Fordham University Radio station WFUV while attending college. After graduating college, he moved back to Washington DC to accept an announcer position at WGMS and WTOP radio stations. Charlie served in the Korean War and was stationed at Loring Air Force Base. He then served in the Air Force Reserves for 18 years. Following active duty, he returned to WTOP as a Radio and TV announcer where he met his future wife Ann Powley. They were married in 1957. While at WTOP he hosted Music Til Dawn. He was hired by the local ABC TV Station WJLA in 1962 where he worked for a short period of time before moving onto the ABC Network where he remained for 33 years as the national TV announcer for news shows originating out of Washington DC. His career also included freelance broadcasting for Voice of America, Government Agencies, and many commercial organizations. Charlie announced the Presidential Inaugural Balls for Presidents George H.W. Bush, and William J. Clinton.

Charlie was an avid golfer. He enjoyed the competitive nature of the game and loved giving back to the sport he so enjoyed. He was past President of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association. He was also a member and past President of Bethesda Country Club, and a member of Pelican Bay Country Club (Daytona Beach, Florida). He was an avid outdoorsman and hobbyist who made many of the electronic devices found around the Hughes' household.

Following his retirement and a move to Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, Charlie enjoyed traveling and visiting family. He is survived by his devoted wife Ann, son David (Lori) of Potomac, Maryland, daughters Julia Hughes of Rockville, Maryland, and Susan Hughes of Altamonte Springs, Florida, and four grandchildren (Courtney, Ryan, Tyler, Michael).

Visitation will be held at Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home at 7557 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, Maryland 20814 from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Wednesday, July 18, 2016. Funeral Services will be held at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 917 Montrose Road, Rockville, Maryland 20852, on Tuesday, July 19th 2016, at 10:00 AM. A Celebration of Life event for family and friends will be held at Bethesda Country Club at 7601 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda, Maryland, 20817 immediately following the Church Service. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a future date and time. In lieu of flowers contributions in Charlie's honor may be made to the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org).
