Charles H. Gerwig, Jr.

Charles H. Gerwig, Jr., passed away peacefully on June 9, 2021, at his home in Ormond Beach,
Florida. He was born on June 24, 1931, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Mary and Charles H. Gerwig,
Sr. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, June H. Gerwig, his brother
Theodore F. Gerwig, and his parents. He leaves behind his two loving daughters, Susan G.
Bouffard (Kirk) of Palm Island, Florida, and Pamela G. Flores (Peter), Ormond Beach, Florida,
along with Grandsons, C. Parker Flores, Steven E. Bouffard and Kirk I. Bouffard.
Raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Charles was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Baltimore Polytech
Institute and an electrical engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins University. He later received
his Masters degree in Management at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He joined the Navy
Reserves at the age of 17 and upon graduation from Johns Hopkins University received his
Navy commission for active duty on the destroyer Sigourney in 1953. In 1955, he extended his
Naval career and went to Guided Missile school and was transferred to White Sands, New
Mexico, where he was a Radar Officer for the Talos Anti-Aircraft Guided Missile development
program. After his tour was over, he re-entered the Naval Reserves. He eventually retired as a
Lieutenant Commander from the Naval Reserves after serving 27 years.
After his active duty, He went to work for the General Electric Company. There he was involved
with the Atlas ICBM Guidance system, which went on to be the booster for the Mercury
Capsule. He was deeply involved in the Mercury and Gemini spacecraft programs, in particular
their guidance systems. He was next involved in the Apollo space program which led him to
interface with NASA. He also has his name inscribed on the Monuments at the Space Walk Hall
of Fame in Titusville, FL.
He retired from GE in 1992, and moved back to Ormond Beach where he had raised his family.
While working for GE in Schenectady, NY, he and wife June bought a home in Glenburnie, NY
on Lake George. During retirement, they spent their time between Ormond Beach and Lake
George.
He and his wife June loved boating, scuba diving, and traveling to the Florida Keys and the
Bahamas. After June passed away in 2006, he bought a home on Summerland Key in the
Florida Keys where he lived for 10 years enjoying boating and fishing and spending time with
family and friends that would come to visit.
He was a member of Lighthouse Presbyterian Church in Ormond Beach and was active in many
other clubs and organizations.
A graveside ceremony will be held in Baltimore, Maryland on June 24, 2021.
