Cesare (Mel) Vola 84 of Port Orange passed away in his sleep at home early Thursday morning August 4. He was born December 12 1926 in Haledon NJ residing there until joining the US Army Air Force in January 1945. After discharge in December 1946 he lived in Miami until Jan. 1960 when he moved to Port Orange. Mel retired from FPL in 1984 after 38 years worked part-time as a security guard and spent several summers working at Yellowstone Park. He also spent many years as a Port Orange volunteer firefighter starting in 1963 later helping to establish the paid full-time firefighters. He retired from the Port Orange Fire Dept. in 1992. He was also active with the Boy Scouts Little League Civil Air Patrol Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association and Sons of Italy. He has been a Mason since 1966. Mel is survived by his wife Betty (56 years); and four children Bill (Wendy) Baytown TX Elizabeth (John) Watauga TX Chuck (Cindy) Port Orange Barbara of Port Orange; and five grandchildren. At Mel's request there will be no public memorial service however there will be an gathering from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday Aug. 7 at the family home for those who wish to ""reminisce a bit"".
