Catherine "Katie"
H. Gallagher-Boyd
Feb 4, 1936 — Jan 18, 2022
Port Orange
Catherine Hickey Gallagher Boyd, known lovingly to all as "Katie", 85, of Port Orange, Florida,
passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at the home of her daughter, Cathy Gallagher RN, in
Port Orange, with her children by her side.
Katie was born on February 4, 1936, in Poughkeepsie, NY, to William and Margaret Hickey. She
attended Marlboro High School and graduated in 1954. It was while in high school that Katie
discovered her love for typing and business and she attended Krissler's Business School in
Poughkeepsie, graduating with "honorable excellence". Katie then began her business career
working as a receptionist and secretary at IBM in Poughkeepsie. After working for five years,
she took a break to have a family and raised her four children with first husband John Gallagher
Sr. while also being a lifeguard, swimming instructor, swim team coach, and waterfront director
at Cluett Schantz Memorial Park (Round Pond) in Milton, NY. She taught hundreds of children
how to swim and was very proud of all her swimmers. She was particularly proud of her swim
team accomplishments. Katie was a diving instructor and diving judge for the Marlboro High
School swim team and also taught Adult Education classes at Marlboro High School. She was
very involved in her New York community. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the
Milton Fire Company and was a volunteer EMT for the Town of Marlboro Volunteer Ambulance
Corp. After raising her children, Katie left the Mid-Hudson Valley and moved to Westport, CT.
She returned to IBM and was rehired as an executive secretary at IBM headquarters in Armonk,
NY. It was while living in Connecticut that she met her second husband Jim Boyd. After
spending years living in Rye, NY, Katie and Jim moved to Cape Cod and enjoyed retirement
living there. They spent time in Vero Beach & Ponce Inlet, Florida in the winter months.
Katie will be remembered fondly as a person who loved and cherished people, and delighted in
birds and flowers. She was a kind, gentle soul, who tried always to "give back" and was always
interested in others and what she could do for them. She didn't talk about herself but always
wanted to know how everyone was doing. When you talked to Katie, you were heard. Katie
maintained lifelong friendships with childhood friends all the way back to kindergarten. She
really enjoyed watching football and was a big Tom Brady fan, following his career on the
Patriots and then was delighted when he became a Tampa Bay Buccaneer in Tampa, FL. Katie
also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and traveling; especially to visit family in Ireland.
Survivors include former husband, John P. Gallagher Sr., of Milton, NY, daughters Cathy
Gallagher, Port Orange, and Joy Gallagher, Ulster Park, NY; and sons, John Gallagher and
fiancée, Misha Allard of New York City, and Tom and Gia Gallagher of Daytona Beach. Katie is
also survived by her grandchildren; Danielle, Juliann, Ryan and Jake; and her late husband's
children; Jimmy Boyd, Quincy, MA, Lisa and David Linton, Nantucket, MA, Alex and Susan Boyd,
Hingham, MA, and grandchildren Chip, Reese, Sarah, Ellis, Lexi, Chris and Graydon; as well as
extended family and friends.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret Hickey, husband, Jim Boyd,
and brother Tom Hickey and his wife, Betty.
