Carol Ruth O'Mitty 85 passed away peacefully early Sunday morning September 28 2008 at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast Florida. She was born August 4 1923 in Missoula Montana to Mildred and Carl Anderson and attended boarding school in Montana and the University of Montana. She moved to Long Beach California to work as a secretary to the Port Admiral of Long Beach during WWII. She met Awny "Mac" or "Mickey" O'Mitty who was in port on liberty and he swept her off her feet. They married on June 15 1946 and soon after moved to Sea Cliff N.Y. where Mac had grown up.
Carol was very active in civic and philanthropic activities including co-leader of the Girl Scout Mariners; President of the PTA the Junior Guild and the Sea Cliff Civic Association. She was the first woman to serve as trustee of the Civic Progress Party and served on the boards of the Sea Cliff Planning Board Friends of the Library North Shore Chapter of American Field Service and the Community Scholarship Fund.
Over the years she worked as secretary to the principal of North Shore High School and as confidential secretary to the Supreme Court Judge of Nassau County N.Y. In 1978 Carol ran for and was elected to the office of Village Clerk of Sea Cliff N.Y. She served 4 years until her retirement in 1982. She and Mac sold their 100+ year-old Victorian Gingerbread home of 34 years and moved onto the Gray Gull a 42 foot custom built boat where they spent the next 3 years traveling up and down the Intracoastal Waterway from New York to the Florida Keys. In 1983 they purchased a home in the new town of Palm Coast Florida where they enjoyed an active social life that centered on golf at the Pine Lakes Golf Club. Carol was a founding member of the Ladies Niners Club and enjoyed swimming bridge and travel. After Mac died in 1998 Carol stayed active in many activities including the church and her golf club. In time Carol met Don Marsden a Palm Coast widower and they enjoyed many years together. A celebration of Carol's life will be held October 10th 2008 at Lohman's Funeral Home at 1:00 PM. Immediately following the service everyone is invited for refreshments at The Pine Lakes Golf Clubhouse. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands; Patty and Bob Stauffer Peggy and Nick Talbott Debbie and Pete Hefner; grand-children Jessica Kenney and Michael Kenney.
