Betty Sullivan Wenger 93 a long-time resident of Ormond by the Sea passed away May 15 2010. She was born in Camden New Jersey to Clarence and Emily Sullivan and was raised in Collingswood NJ. Betty was a graduate of Collingswood High School and the New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro where she delivered the commencement address. She later returned to Glassboro and received her B.S. degree in 1970. Betty was a talented teacher whose career spanned 32 years in New Jersey elementary schools. She spent eleven years teaching kindergarten at the Mark Newbie School in Collingswood and ended her career as the kindergarten teacher for the Avalon and Stone Harbor Public Schools. After Betty retired in 1981 although she continued to work as a substitute teacher she and her husband Fred traveled throughout the world attending Elderhostels and enjoying cruises. Betty produced beautiful handwork but especially loved cooking and entertaining. Her collection of recipes was extensive and some of these recipes were published in her local New Jersey paper. Betty was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Retired Teachers of New Jersey. After she and Fred moved to Ormond by the Sea in 1991 she enrolled as a volunteer for the Literacy Program and for Hospice. She was an active member of the Riverview United Methodist Church where she participated in the Ruth Circle and supported the Mission Shop. After Fred's death in 2004 she moved to the Riviera Assisted Living Facility in Holly Hill and then in 2009 to Summerfield Florida. Betty is survived by her son Dr. Fred "Kip" (Laura) Wenger; daughter Patricia (Dick) Gable; grandchildren Matthew and Katie Wenger Richard (Sara) Gable Wendy Gable and great-grandchildren Daniel and Jack Gable. Betty was predeceased by her husband Fred and her brother Harry Sullivan. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Monday May 24 2010 at the Riverview United Methodist Church 2253 John Anderson Drive Ormond by the Sea FL 32176. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her name to the church named above.
