Betty Jane (Mowrey) Shilinskas died peacefully on May 1, 2017, at Halifax Health Inpatient
Hospice Center in Port Orange, FL.
Betty was the third of four children born to Frederick Franklin and Emma Esther (Cook) Mowrey.
All three of Betty's siblings, Frederick, Rhea and Wayne, preceded her in death.
Betty was born in Williamsport, PA on January 31, 1922, and moved to Naugatuck, CT at the age
of ten. Betty attended Naugatuck High School where she was named the Senior Class Beauty. Betty graduated in 1939.
Betty was married to Edmund J. Shilinskas, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life,
on August 15, 1942. They had three children, Kent, Gayle, and Lynn. Kent and Lynn preceded
their mother in death. Her husband died in 1978.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Gayle Smith of Laurel, Maryland, and two grandsons: Mark Laudate (Michele Stone), of Oakland, CA and Benjamin Staskiewicz, (Jennifer Thomas ) of South Glastonbury, CT, and twin great granddaughters, Lauren and Natalie Staskiewicz.
Betty worked for A T& T in CT as an information and toll operator for many years. She was a
member of several organizations: The Pennsylvania Club, and PORT (a seniors travel
club). She enjoyed travel, baking and giving away her famous Christmas cookies, playing cards,
bingo, bowling and knitting for charity and veteran's organizations.
Betty was a member of Port Orange Presbyterian Church, and was ordained as an elder at
Southminster Presbyterian Church.
A Memorial Service will be held at Port Orange Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 11, 2017,
at 11:00 am.
