Mrs. Bertha Marie Kirby, age 87, of Daytona Beach Shores, pased away in her sleep June 2. Bertha Kirby was born in Hallandale, Florida Nov. 8, 1930 to Jason and Signora Kersey. She graduated from Edison High School, where she was a member of the Edison Cadets, and graduated from Florida State University with a BA in Art Education. While attending FSU, she and her husband Jim helped start the first Lutheran Student Organization on campus. Bertha and her family moved to Daytona Beach in 1961. She was a well-known water-color artist, art teacher, a former president of the Ponce Inlet Art Guild and the Lads 'n' Lassies Dance Club, a member of the Pallet & Brush Club, and an active choir member at Trinity Lutheran since 1962. Mrs. Kirby was also an active member of Lutheran Brotherhood, the Cradle Roll at Trinity, and other ministries there including Vacation Bible School for decades and the youth theater ministry with her husband Jim. She was also an exceptional Cub Scout leader, including Den Mother and Asst. Cubmaster. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jim Kirby. She is survived by her children David Mitchell (Becky) Kirby, Steven Douglas (Bonnie) Kirby, Susan Elaine Laski (Gary), and Dennis Alan(Shirley) Kirby, and a brother, Richard Kersey of Jacksonville, as well as 12 grandchildren (and the great-grandchildren): Sean (Alexandra)Kirby and their children Grady and Avery; Ryan (Betsy) Laski and their children Olivia, Ryleigh and Brennan; Daniel Kirby and his sons Aden and Jack; Joel (Veronica) Kirby and their daughters Ryleigh and Raegan; Scott (Bonnie G.) Kirby and their children Beckett, Baylor and new baby Whitten; Erin (Matthew) Davies ; Garret, Brandon and Allison Laski; James, John and JuliAna Kirby; and 12 beloved nieces and nephews in Florida and 4 in Louisiana. The visitation for Bertha Marie Kirby is Thursday evening June 14 from 6:30 till 8:30 at Lohman Funeral Home in Daytona Beach. The Funeral service is Friday June 15 at 11 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Holly Hill, Rev. Russell Anderson and Rev. Dave Kirby officiating. Burial is at Daytona Memorial Park. Donations can be made to your favorite art guild or church.
