Benjamin Colón,
Sr.
Jun 5, 1933 — Jan 20, 2022
Palm Coast
Benjamin Colón, Sr
. was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico on June 5, 1933 to Jacobo Colón and Blanca Rolón (yes, really). The time was post-The Great Depression and Franklin D. Roosevelt was president.
As a boy growing up in PR, Ben enjoyed fishing, swimming, riding his bike and going to baseball games. He was a good student and a wiz at math.
At the age of 15 Ben and his mother set out for a new life in New York City. Soon he would meet Maria, the love of his life. Ben and Maria worked in a sewing factory by day and enjoyed the sounds of the Latin beat by night. As his family expanded, Ben left the factory to become a Yellow Cab driver and eventually a bus driver for MABSTOA.
In his prime, Ben enjoyed camping, hunting, biking, motorcycling, running, and technology. Together Ben and Maria raised 5 children; 3 boys – Benny Jr., Jimmie, & Ritchie; and 2 girls – Lexy & Blanca. Sadly, Ben outlived his 3 sons and his wife, Maria. At the age 88 his simple pleasures were, beating anyone at chess and dominoes, watching boxing and baseball, and drinking café con leche.
Benjamin is survived by his step-brother Francis Colón; his daughters Lexy Kramer and Blanca Colón (yes, really); 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren, and; 2 great-great grandchildren.
