Beatrice (Betty) King age 85 of Daytona Beach Shores passed away Monday November 8 2010.
Betty was born in London England in April 1925 the only daughter of the late Harry and Beatrice Betts. She was evacuated from London at the onset of WWII with her school to Devon in SW England. Upon completion of school she joined the British Intelligence Service which ultimately led to a position with the Diplomatic Service in Bangkok Thailand. There she met her husband Donald who was with the U. S. Military Attach Office. They were married at Christ Church in Bangkok on February 13 1948.
Betty held a Master's Degree with Honors in Humanities that she received from the Open University in Great Britain. Betty worked for the British Office of Censuses and Surveys for seven years. While stationed in Saudi Arabia with her husband she served the Saudi International School System for ten years. She and her husband lived in many locations around the world including Thailand Guatemala England Scotland Saudi Arabia and the U.S. during the course of their marriage finally retiring in Florida.
She will be remembered for the extensive work she did with the Volusia Literacy Council during the past ten years. Always an avid sportswoman she was an equestrian played golf and tennis was an accomplished swimmer and Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and most recently enjoyed working out with friends at the local YMCA. Betty will be eternally missed by all who knew and loved her.
Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years Donald; children Michael King Susan Milstrey and Stephen King; brother Keith Betts; six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at a later date with details to follow.
