HELLER BARBARA JANE-Barbara Jane Heller passed away on August 6th. At 86 she led the life of 2-3 regular people. She was born in Abilene Kansas and attended Kansas State University where she received her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. She later attended Columbia University in New York City and obtained her PhD in Physical Education. In her 20's she became a competition rated sharp shooter. She also obtained a pilot's license and flew all over the east coast. Barbara was a professor at Ohio State University and always cheered on her Buckeyes. With her parents Sam and Dorothy Heller she frequented the White House when President Eisenhower was in office. She was a stout Republican and supported the party throughout her years. As a professor she moved to California and taught at University of Southern California . Barbara traveled the world. She was one of the earliest passengers on the Concord flying back from England after taking the Queen Mary luxury ship east on the Atlantic Ocean. The Orient Express from London to Venice was another adventure. When her father died and her mother came to Daytona Beach Shores Barbara decided to retire and join her. That lasted about 2 weeks! She taught EMT classes at Daytona Beach Community College . She started volunteering with the Red Cross and dedicated thousands of hours and held many state and national positions. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was also a calling to which she again donated many hours. She enjoyed cruising the Halifax River on her own boat and earned the Captain designation. As a child and into adulthood her family had a lake house on Lake Erie where she learned to fish and pilot boats. Living in the Shores' she became involved in city politics. She won election for city commissioner and then went on to become mayor. She loved serving the city she now called home. In her seventies she even worked with the City of Daytona Beach and was instrumental in organizing the environmental river clean ups and recycling programs. Barbara leaves behind her cousin Elinor Cunningham and numerous friends colleagues and admirers. She touched the lives of all who knew her and is greatly missed.
