Obituary

Ann Mate Scott of Sarasota, FL and North Haven, NY, passed away on February 6, 2026, at age 100. She was raised in Yonkers, NY, graduated with an English degree from Mary Washington College in 1948, and led the Letters Departments at Life Magazine, Time/Life Books, and untimely Sports Illustrated, retiring in 1986. Ann was independent, witty, enjoyed reading, gardening, animals, travel, and a good scotch. For retirement, she traveled around the world on the Queen Elizabeth II. She cherished time with her brother Stanley, her nephew Stuart and nieces Penny and Annie, all of whom predeceased her.

Ann’s remarkable century of life was marked by a deep appreciation for literature, art, and adventure. Her keen intellect and vibrant sense of humor endeared her to friends and colleagues alike. Throughout her distinguished career at some of the most influential publications of her era, Ann inspired those around her with her dedication and professionalism. Her love for animals and the natural world reflected her compassionate spirit, and her passion for travel took her from the streets of New York to distant continents, where she embraced new cultures and experiences. Ann’s legacy lives on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
