Angus Stephen Schmelz 84 of Ormond Beach passed away on Sunday November 4 2007. A memorial service will be held at the Disabled American Veterans Hall of Holly Hill on Thursday November 8 2007 at 11:00am. Angus was born on October 19 1923 in New York City NY but lived in Ormond by the Sea for the past 36 years. He was an U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II serving on the destroyer USS Herndon which was the first ship in on the attack of Normandy Beach in France on D Day. He was responsible for forming the USS Herndon Association in 1967 and chaired many reunions and newsletters to keep his fellow comrades together. He was the past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans of Holly Hill Chapter 84. He also served as their Chaplain photographer & service officer. He was appointed as the National Chief of Staff in 1994. He organized many trips to various nursing and veteran homes and was constantly helping others gain benefits and comfort with their needs. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Charlotte of Ormond by the Sea; a son David and his wife Christine of Ormond by the Sea; two daughters Susan Brown and husband William of Flagler Beach and Joyce Walters and her husband Mark of Avon IN. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He will be greatly missed by all. Condolences may be shared with the family online at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com.
