Angelo Michael Mercorelli

Angelo went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 24 at the age of 99. Angelo was born on October 8, 1919 in Bronx, N.Y. to Nicola and Theresa (Dartoli) Mercorelli. In 1936 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he proudly served for 4 years and in 1941, Angelo was drafted into the 8 ^th Army Air Corp and deployed to Halesworth, England as a ball-gunner on the B24 Liberator with the 498 ^th bomber group. He survived his assigned missions and was transferred back to California where he trained as ball-gunner on the new B29's. His new bomber group was assigned to Hawaii to await further orders on their deployment to a closer Air Corp facility to prepare for the invasion of Japan. The invasion was postponed after the nuclear bombings in Japan and the eventual Japanese surrender. Angelo was released from duty and returned to New York. He married Dorothy Kunis on May 14, 1949 and the two spent 58 wonderful years together until her death in 2007. Angelo worked at Mitchell Field on Long Island, N.Y. as a supply inventory manager before moving to Deltona, Fl. in 1966 when his company transferred to the Naval Training Center in Orlando. Following his retirement, Angelo worked as a bank courier and sang in the choir of United Methodist Church in Deltona. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Baum (Clarke), his son, Nicola Mercorelli (Terri), his four grandchildren, Sean and Jason Baum, Corey Mercorelli, Tracey Mason, 3 great-grandchildren, Carson, Justin and Tyler and his 2 siblings, George Mercorelli and Gloria Cosimano. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday January 2 ^nd 2019 at the Lohman Funeral home in Daytona Beach at 11:30 am, with a visitation beginning at 11.
