IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alvero James
Terry
March 2, 1936 – April 24, 2024
ALVERO JAMES TERRY, usually referred to as "Vere" the first child of James and Beatrice Terry was born March 2, 1936 in St. Johns, Antigua. His siblings were Jean, Shelton, Clifton, Renau, Inez and Josie. As the eldest child, he willingly fulfilled the leadership role in the family.
Growing up, he and his brothers and sisters spent a lot of time with their cousins, Roma and Evan Creque, Doreen, Earl, and Walter Parker. As his mother told it, her house was always filled with "family". Vere was loved and respected by siblings and other family members. He was very popular among his friends and was admired by many outsiders who observed the manner in which he conducted himself.
He attended the T.O.R Memorial High School and later the Antigua Grammar School (AGS). There he excelled academically at each level and his diligence and hard work paid off as he received his Cambridge School Certificate and Higher School Certificate. This was quite an accomplishment.
In addition to being a good student, he was involved in many sporting and social activities. Notably, he represented and captained the school's cricket and soccer teams and participated in track and field. It was an honor that he was chosen to serve as 'Head Boy' at AGS.
He loved to dance and played a leadership role in the family home-schooled dance classes and the local square dance group.
After graduating from High School, Vere worked as a Civil Servant in the Secretariat in Antigua before leaving to pursue his academic goals.
He attended Hampton University in Norfolk Virginia and Howard University in Washington D.C. He graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.
In 1963, Vere started his career as a Junior Civil Engineer for the New York City Housing Authority and subsequently, as Resident Engineer and then Deputy Engineer, Borough of Manhattan. Among the notable projects that he oversaw was the construction of the Schomburg Library in Harlem. His knowledge, experience and leadership skills prepared him for his eventual appointment to the position of Borough Engineer, Borough of Brooklyn, New York.
He was President of the Antigua Progressive Society, an organization with its office in Harlem where members met for meetings to discuss issues of their concern and to host social events.
Everyone in the family knew that Vere never hesitated to offer up advice even when it is not asked of him. However, it was the norm that family members, especially those of the previous generation did indeed believe that his advice was sound and would often solicit it.
Vere met Letha Wilkinson at Hampton University and after a period of courtship, they were married. They had two children, their daughter Faye Denise and their son Roland.
After many years of marriage, they were divorced. He later renewed a long-time friendship with Jean Walter, a friendship that culminated in their marriage September 2, 1997. They moved to Palm Coast Florida where they resided until Jean's passing in July 2022.
Throughout his life, Vere remained committed to maintaining the unity of the older generation of Parkers: Oliver, Jimmy, Inez, Victoria, Willemina, Beatrice, George, Roy and Ruby, and played a pivotal role in convincing the younger generation of Terrys, Creques and Parkers of the importance of preserving the family ownership of the Dry Hill lands inherited from his grandfather, William W. Parker.
He was instrumental in establishing the family-owned corporation, Parker Enterprise Ltd, and was elected to serve as the company's president. He cherished the experience of presiding over the successful development of Phase 1A (Villa R3) Ocean Village at Dry Hill.
Vere is survived by his daughter Faye, his grandson Randy and his granddaughter Tenae, his brothers Shelton and Clifton and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves to mourn him, his step grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jamie and Faye, Jean's sister Avonelle Haywood and her brother Norris Walter and his wife Penny who were very close to him and who cared for him when he was no longer in good health. Also mourning him, are his brothers-in-law, Clifford Walter of Orlando Florida and Eugene Walter of Toronto, Canada.
Long time Friend, Co-Worker and Neighbor… Linda Anderson
Long time Friend… Marie Collins
Friends, Raymond Jackson, Vivian Rowe, Regis & Christine Williams of Palm Coast.
Vere will always be remembered for his diligent work ethic, generous disposition, broad smile and loyalty to his family and friends.
