Obituary

Alva Caroline Singley Gill, 83, passed away on August 18, 2013, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Born on December 3, 1929 in Columbia, South Carolina; Alva was the daughter of Alvin Arthur and Kathleen Reynolds Singley.

Alva lived in Statesboro, Georgia until the age of 7. She then moved to Columbia, South Carolina where she attended McMaster Elementary School, University High School and the University of South Carolina. On December 20, 1947 Alva married Charles W. Gill. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

In 1952, Alva and Charles moved to Alexandria, Virginia (a suburb of Washington, D.C.) where she taught school in the Alexandria City School System for 25 years. Most of these years were at T.C. Williams High School. Alva was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and earned her Master's Degree from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She was an excellent pianist, an avid reader, and a life-long seeker of knowledge. She loved to travel and ride her bicycle on the beach. She was a member of AAUW and the NEA.

Alva is survived by her husband of 65 years, Charles W. Gill and three children, Charles W. Gill, Jr. (Judy); Kathleen Susan Gill Cortez (Michael); and Thomas Arthur Gill (Claire) and seven grandchildren: Caroline Gill, James Gill, Nicholas Gill; Kyle Cortez, Connor Cortez; Charles Gill, and Christopher Gill. She is also survived by a sister, Marion R. Singley, brother-in-law Carlton Betenbaugh, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. at the Lohman Funeral Home Port Orange on Dunlawton Avenue. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Salvation Army. Burial will take place at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va. at 1pm Thursday, August 29, 2013.
