A Memorial Service for Alice Norris Strickland age 91 of Ormond Beach who died on Tuesday August 5 2003 will be held on August 15 2003 at 5:00 pm at Ormond Funeral Home. Family will receive friends on August 15 2003 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at Ormond Funeral Home.

Mrs. Strickland was born in 1912 and came to Ormond Beach as a child in 1921 from Handsworth Birmingham England. Alice lived in the Nathan Cobb Cottage on Orchard Lane and attended Ormond Elementary School Seabreeze High School and Mundell?s Business School. Her first job was working for Edith Foulke Stanton at the Anderson-Price Memorial Library. She married Cary E. Strick Strickland in 1933.

She became fascinated with the history of Ormond Beach and was compelled to become an author and historian. She has been a research authority on Florida history and specialized in Volusia County and Ormond Beach. She served thirteen years as curator of The Fred Dana Marsh Museum in Tomoka State Park. She has been a member of the Ormond Writer?s League The Halifax Historical Society The National League of American Penwomen and Volusia County Historical Commission.

She received the Honorary Award of The Ormond Beach Historical Trust in 1988 and was voted Woman of the Year in 1991 by the citizens of Ormond Beach. She has published four books and numerous articles and is considered the authority on Ormond Beach history.

Survivors include two sons: Cary and Carl Strickland; seven grandchildren: Duane Strickland Candace Lay Susan Strickland Carly Strickland Courtney Strickland Brittany Strickland and Alex Strickland; and four great-grandchildren: Randall Lay Aaron Lay Morgan Strickland and Chase Strickland.
