Obituary

Alfred S. "Barney" Barnhart, Jr., the only son of the late A. S. Barnhart and Beatrice Zimmerman Barnhart was born on December 31, 1925 in Daytona Beach, Florida, and passed on March 22, 2018 at his home with his wife and family at his side
He attended local schools and was a proud graduate of The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended the University of Arizona in Tucson where he was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. Following military service with the U. S. Signal Corps he returned to Daytona Beach where he spent most of his life.
He and his father owned the "Seaview Manor Motel" from 1947 until 1981 when he sold it and retired to follow other real estate pursuits.
Barney was very active in civic affairs, serving as 1st Vice President of the Daytona Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, Chapter Chairman of the American Red Cross, Captain of the Daytona Beach Quarterback Club, President of the Daytona Beach Lions Club and President of the Daytona Beach Rotary Club, a member of the Daytona Beach Red Cross Life Saving Corp, and a 15 year Little League Manager.
He was very active in bringing the London Symphony Orchestra to our area and served as Fund Raising Chairman for several years. He was proud to be a Master Mason and Shriner.
Barney was an excellent gin rummy and bridge player, but his favorite passions were tennis and especially golf, where he made many of his life long friendships and was a Charter member of Oceanside Country Club for over 50 years, and served as President in 1975. He shot his age many times and had 6 holes-in-one.
Barney loved to recite poems from repertoire that he learned from his mother, listened to music and rooted for the "Florida Gators".
He was an empowering role model to those who knew him, a loving and gentle man, and all who shared his friendship were made richer by knowing him.
Left behind are his best friend and loving wife of 40 years, Marion; three sons: Alfred S. III (Laurie), Jonathan Scott, and Jerome Clark (Gayle), and one daughter: Jennifer Lynn Alam (Bob)...six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one delightful cat, Sophie.
